The embattled governor of Imo state, Rochas Okorocha, has sued the Independent National Electoral Commission before the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking an order compelling it to issue to him a certificate of return as the senator-elect for the Imo West Senatorial District.
In the suit filed on his behalf by his lawyer, Mr. Kehinde Ogunwumiju (SAN), the plaintiff made INEC the sole defendant in the suit.
INEC had refused to issue him the certificate of return after the Returning Officer for the February 23 election, Prof Francis Ibeawuchi, said he had announced the outgoing governor as winner of the senatorial election under duress.
“I declared this thing before under duress; I’m still under duress declaring this one,” Professor Innocent Ibeawuchi said.
He then went on to declare, “That Okorocha Anayo Rochas of APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, has scored the highest number of votes, is hereby declared the winner and returned elected.”
Governor Okorocha, however, rejected the allegations and accused the returning officer of acting a script.
“That guy is playing a script and that is why I must ask the INEC REC to quickly correct some of these abnormalities,” Governor Okorocha said.
