The Special Adviser to the President on Politics, Babafemi Ojudu on Sunday said that the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Mahmood Yakubu, has no power to halt political campaigns.
” Section 99 of the Electoral Act allows political campaign till 24 hours to election. INEC Chairman cannot by mere pronouncement amend the above mentioned statutory provision, he said on his twitter page.
” I will therefore continue to campaign for the candidate of my choice in accordance to the law, he said.
The INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, at a press briefing with major stakeholders on Saturday, said political parties campaign remain closed.
According to the law, campaigns are to be wrapped up 24 hours to the elections. Hence, many argued that since the election date was rescheduled, campaigns should also continue till 24 hours to the new date.
” The limitation of campaign imposed by INEC should be reversed without any delay, said Mr. Femi Falana on Sunday.
Leaders of political parties Sunday said they’ll continue with their campaigns on Monday.
